Events that led to eventValue – Event 3

By Vinayak Rajanahally, Founder and CEO, eventValue

Hope you read the previous parts of this blog series –Events that led to eventValue – Event 2 and Event 1

Let me share the last one, Event 3 below that led to creating eventValue.

Event 3

As part of my Telecom career, I was attending and Speaking at various national, international Conferences and Tradefairs.  ITW event (International Telecoms Week) at Washington DC (now it happens at Chicago) was one annual event that was a must attend from Who’s who of telecom industry.

In the ITW event held in 2010 at Washington DC, I saw that the conference had several interesting sessions from eminent speakers about the future of telecom and data.  I wanted to listen to those sessions, but was mired in several meetings with our clients, new prospects and ended up missing them.  Asked Organizers for videos and they refused to share.

ITW was a 3 day long event with Cocktail Networking evenings sponsored by various Telecom companies.  In one of those Networking event, I was standing alone sipping my drink after a long hectic day of meetings.  People were busy networking and I didn’t seem to know any of them.  I saw another guy standing in the corner who was alone too.  Went up to him, introduced myself and started chatting.  The conversation went pretty interesting and couldn’t realize we spoke for 40 mins about various topics.  Exchanged our business cards and promised to remain in touch.  After the event, that person connected me to his friend with whom I ended up eventually doing Millions of dollars business for my company.

Two things stayed in my mind.  I had gone all the way to Washington DC spending money on flight, hotel and could not attend those conference sessions I wanted to.  Wish I had atleast got videos of them.  Secondly, could I have done millions of dollars business if I had not walked up and said ‘Hi’ to that guy in the Cocktail evening ?  Was it all luck and serendipity that connected me to him ?  How many more of such people may have been in that crowd of 2000 attendees ?

Genesis of eventValue

When I decided to become an Entrepreneur, I was wondering which idea or opportunity should I work on ?  Unfortunately, I could not find an opportunity within my domain of Telecom, despite working for over a decade in it.  It does not mean that there were no opportunities for startups in Telecom.  Perhaps long years of my working in Telecom had made me biased and I probably had developed blind spots.

During my stint of working, I had made note of several pain points I thought were worth solving, ranging from Food, Agriculture, Entertainment, ECommerce, etc.,  Out of them, the pain points I experienced in these 3 events looked deep and resonating.

Thought of building a solution that can solve these 3 pain points of #Event Discovery, #Attendee Networking and #Content Access.  Felt passionate and undertook market research for the same.  Was surprised to find these pain points were still unsolved, despite Professional Events being a multi billion dollar and centuries old industry.

Being new to events industry, I had to start afresh studying it from a novice’s perspective.  Took considerable time for me to learn the ropes, conceptualize a unique product like eventValue after meticulous research and validation from event attendees and organizers.

I was fortunate to have Mr. Srinivas Reddy, as Cofounder and CTO and a Rockstar team backing us.  Now the eventValue journey has started.  Not sure how will this go – How far ? How well and How Big ?  I am unable to connect the dots looking forward.  But I will surely be able to connect the dots in future, looking back.
